You would think a positive result on a pregnancy test would be all you need to move forward, but it isn’t. There is more information to learn, and you can only get it with an ultrasound.

What Is An ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a safe procedure to learn more details about your pregnancy. Ultrasound uses the echo of high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your uterus.

Our sonographer puts a gel-like substance on your abdomen. Then, a device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel on your stomach to pick up the sound waves.

The ultrasound converts those echoes of sound waves into images on a screen. The sonographer can review it and tell you the specific details of your pregnancy.

Why do I need an ultrasound?

Not only is ultrasound the best tool to gain medical information about your pregnancy, but our licensed medical professional also looks for possible safety concerns. There are three main reasons you need an ultrasound:

1. To learn pregnancy viability

According to the Mayo Clinic, up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. They believe the number is higher because many women miscarry before realizing they’re pregnant.

Pregnancy viability means you haven’t miscarried, and the pregnancy is developing with a detectable heartbeat.

2. How Far Along You Are In Your Pregnancy

Knowing the gestational age (how far along you are) is essential, especially if you’re considering abortion. The abortion procedure you receive is determined by how many weeks you’ve been pregnant.

Do you feel confident you know the date your pregnancy started? If not, you need an ultrasound.

3. The Location of Your Pregnancy

Although rare, your pregnancy’s location could be somewhere other than your uterus. This type of pregnancy is referred to as ectopic. Pregnancies that develop outside the uterus can be life-threatening.
